KNOX COMMUNITY SENDS CLEAR MESSAGE TO LABOR GOVERNMENT

19th October 2009

Liberal State MP Nick Wakeling delivered a clear message to the Brumby Labor Government this week, tabling a petition signed by 820 concerned Knox residents.

The petition concerning the 87 unit social housing development planned for the former Ferntree Gully Primary School site, was tabled in Parliament on Wednesday and called for the Brumby Labor Government to "postpone the commencement of the development pending a thorough consultation period with the community, with the continuation of the development to be dependent on the wishes of that community".

"It is extremely important that the community is consulted on this planning proposal," Mr Wakeling said.

"Local residents have a right to express their views. This is a fundamental right.

"It is now up to the Brumby Government to listen to the views of local residents and consult with the Knox community on this development.

"Members of the Labor Government have criticised me for standing up for my community on this issue. However, I feel it is extremely important that communities are given a voice and are not ignored by an arrogant Brumby Government deaf to the views of anyone outside their Spring Street office," Mr Wakeling said.
